Dr. Indranil Bandyopadhyay is a leading fusion scientist with more than three decades of experience in fusion science and tokamak research. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Physics from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, followed by a Master’s degree from the University of Calcutta and a Ph.D. from the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR). He currently serves as the Head of the Tokamak Physics and Simulation Group at IPR and leads the physics design team for SST-Bharat, India’s proposed next-step deuterium–tritium fusion reactor. Throughout his career, he has contributed extensively to fusion research through work on major international tokamak experiments, including TCV (Switzerland), DIII-D and Alcator C-Mod (USA), and ASDEX Upgrade (Germany). He has been actively involved in the ITER project since India joined the collaboration in 2005 and is among the longest-serving members of the ITER Science and Technology Advisory Committee (STAC). He currently chairs the MHD, Disruption and Control Topical Group of the International Tokamak Physics and Engineering Activity (ITPEA), which coordinates international fusion R&D in support of ITER.
