Abhijit Sen is an Emeritus Professor and INSA Honorary Scientist at the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar. A theoretical physicist by training, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee, U.S.A., and conducted postdoctoral research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory before joining the emerging plasma physics group at the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. He played a key role in establishing IPR and served as its Dean as well as the S. Chandrasekhar Chair Professor.
Prof. Sen’s research interests cover a wide range of topics in plasma physics, including magnetic fusion, nonlinear plasma phenomena, intense laser–plasma interactions, and dynamical studies of coupled oscillator systems with relevance to biological and neuronal processes. He has contributed significantly to India’s national magnetic fusion program and has served on several international panels, including the ITER project.
He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, the National Academy of Sciences India, and the American Physical Society. He has also held visiting positions at leading institutions worldwide, including MIT and the University of Aix-Marseille.
