Session Description

This masterclass explores breakthrough technologies aimed at accelerating the realization of practical fusion energy. Dr. Maingi will introduce the concept of Transformative Enabling Capabilities, which are game-changing innovations designed to overcome key scientific and engineering barriers. He will also outline five priority technology areas identified in a major U.S. study, including advanced algorithms, high-temperature superconductors, advanced materials, tritium fuel cycle technologies, and liquid metal plasma-facing components. The session will also highlight how the National Spherical Torus Experiment-Upgrade (NSTX-U) at PPPL, set to resume operations in late 2026, plans to leverage three of these enabling capabilities to advance high-performance spherical tokamak research and strengthen progress toward sustainable fusion power.

Key Takeaways

  • Understand “Transformative Enabling Capabilities” as fusion game-changers
  • Identify five high-impact technologies accelerating fusion deployment
  • Explore how NSTX-U integrates next-generation enabling capabilities

Who Should Attend

This Masterclass will benefit students, researchers, and faculty from diverse fields including physics, materials science, electrical and mechanical engineering, and energy systems. It will also interest professionals from renewable energy, advanced materials, and technology sectors who wish to understand how fusion research could shape future energy solutions. Policymakers, R&D leaders, and industry stakeholders engaged in science and technology strategy will find valuable insights on aligning academic innovation, industrial development, and policy direction toward India’s and the world’s fusion mission.
