General Management and Multidimensional Approach in Business
“To be a good business Manager, one needs to have a solid grasp of all functions of the business, regardless of one’s specialisation in any function” said Mr Manab Bose, Adjunct Faculty in Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management, IIM Udaipur in an enlightening session with the students of Jio Institute at the Ulwe campus.
Mr Manab Bose, a “practitioner-scholar”, has a wealth of full-time, hands-on experience in business start-ups, turnaround, organisation development, and leadership coaching - in academia, a major PSU, two Indian conglomerates, two major MNCs, and private equity investment, in a career spanning 25+ years.
In the session with the students, he described what general management is: A mix of various functions in the business such as Sales, marketing, operations, HR, Finance and Technology (IT, AI and others), and how crucial it is for any business manager to understand every function fundamentally.
Mr Bose further went on to explain the “Multidimensional approach”. A Manager should consider all aspects of the business at both macro and micro levels. For example, understanding the cost of scaling up as well as the margins of a single article of product.
Mr Bose explained how one should think critically at every juncture in business development, using various case studies. He delved deep into the concepts of the 4Ps of Marketing, Costing, Recruitment and Talent Training, Marketing Channel Strategies, Distribution models, and Supply chain through real-life business examples from his own experiences.
The end of the session saw Mr Bose and the students discuss on Career growth, Industry Insights and business problems. Mr Bose strongly encouraged the students to develop and hone their Presentation, Public Speaking and analytical skills, which would complement their knowledge and hard skills in landing their dream role.
Jio Institute in its effort to give a holistic learning experience to students, brings various industry experts and academicians as speakers to the classroom, enriching student minds.
